Roger Aceves Announces Candidacy

Press Release Sent on June 14, 2006

Santa Barbara Police Officer and former President of the 19th Agricultural District Roger Aceves announced today that he will be running for a seat on Goleta's city council this November.

"I have lived in Goleta for 24 years and I look forward to offering my experience in managing budgets, organizations and most importantly--getting people to work together toward a common goal", said Aceves.
Aceves outlined law enforcement, finding a balance between growth and housing, and creating a more participatory city government that cooperates with other government agencies as the main issues he plans to bring up in the campaign.

"With my 29 years of experience in law enforcement as both a Deputy Sheriff and a Detective in the Major Crimes Division in Santa Barbara, making Goleta the safest city in the county will be my primary goal. I will be an advocate for a more community-based style of policing where you will come to know the police officers that protect your neighborhood".

Aceves opposes rampant growth in the Goleta Valley and is committed to protecting agricultural areas, open space and the character of neighborhoods. He also pointed out, however, that Goleta's city council needs to do a better job at addressing housing needs and find ways to place low impact, mixed-use projects in appropriate locations.

"Not everyone can afford to live on the South Coast and we by no means have an obligation to house everyone--but we should be creating more affordable housing where appropriate and within limits. Rehabilitation of our Old Town should be one of our top priorities as a city", said Aceves.

Aceves served for four years as President of the 19th Agricultural District which runs Earl Warren Showgrounds. During his tenure, the organizations revenue increased and an innovative solar energy project was implemented in cooperation with the State of California. He has served as El Presidente of Old Spanish Days in Santa Barbara and is on the board of the Santa Barbara Scholarship Foundation.
